Embarking on this journey through Central and South America, my first stop in Guatemala proved to be an enchanting initiation. With no set expectations, my heart wide open and a mind buzzing with the spirit of adventure, I found myself in a realm of unknown possibilities.
The journey to reach my destination was an adventure in itself, encompassing a 26-hour odyssey with a layover in Madrid and a long taxi drive from the busy Guatemala City to the tranquil shores of El Paredón. As I arrived, darkness cloaked the landscape, revealing a hostel named Mellow. My introduction to this new world was a bit unconventional — I stumbled into my little tipi amidst a lively beer pong party by the pool. The oppressive humidity and soaring temperatures were a stark contrast to what my body was accustomed to, but the salvation came in the form of a ceiling fan inside my tent. From the cozy confines, I observed the shadows of tropical plants dancing outside and listened to the serenade of crickets that gently lulled me to sleep.
Early Riser
Jetlag became an inadvertent ally, coaxing me awake at 5:30 a.m., perfectly timed for sunrise. Armed with a towel, I made my way to the beach, greeted by a sight unlike any other. Volcanic black sand stretched for kilometres, meeting the horizon in a breathtaking display. The beach, adorned with only a handful of fellow early risers, became my sanctuary.
The ensuing days unfolded with a tapestry of experiences—hours of reading by the pool, encounters with kindred spirits sharing tales of their adventures, brief explorations of the town curtailed by the relentless heat, attempts at riding waves and rediscovering the art of surfing, and the privilege of witnessing every sunrise and sunset.
El Paredón
A place where tourism had tentatively taken root just fifteen years prior, revealed its unique charm. The main road was paved, but the rest were sandy paths. Thatched roofs crowned the houses, and lush greenery surrounded every corner. Stray dogs and shy kittens meandered through the streets, while surfers carrying their boards to the beach were a common sight. The scent of freshly made tortillas wafted through the air, and between one-story houses lay fields of sesame, palm trees, and vibrant flowers.
Serene Solitude
In that week, I discovered the art of solitude—not in a negative sense, but as a profound understanding of my need for personal time. I reveled in moments alone on the beach, absorbing the present—the aroma of the ocean breeze, the sensation of sand between my toes, and the rhythmic melody of waves caressing the shore.
Occasionally, I would pause my book, observing the lively interactions at the hostel. Laughter and lively discussions about travel, home, dreams, and realities enveloped me. I relished soaking in their energy, sometimes observing and sometimes participating. Laughter echoed through the air as we went for dinner, rented surfboards, and collectively cheered on each other's triumphs when someone conquered a wave.
In the hammocks, discussions unfolded about life's unpredictable ways, how it places us precisely where we need to be. This experience taught me to attune to my body's needs at different moments of the day, fostering a newfound balance. We don't always need to be actively engaged; sometimes, we can simply be.
Surf, Sand & Yoga
As my time in the serene beach town of El Paredón continued, the transition to a new chapter unfolded—an ADzenTURE, a yoga retreat seamlessly woven into the fabric of this coastal haven. Opting for a respite from the daytime heat, I hopped on a tuk-tuk and arrived at Swell, a surf and lifestyle hotel nestled within the embrace of El Paredón. My abode, an open room beneath a thatch roof, afforded me a view and the soothing sounds of the ocean. As the group assembled, weary from their journeys, we shared a delightful dinner, initiating the process of becoming a tight-knit family over the ensuing days.
The retreat theme, "Grounding in Gratitude," set the tone for the week. Gratitude became a daily practice, expressed for the unforgettable people, the profound conversations forging lifelong friendships, the spirit of fresh starts, the resilience of our bodies during challenging yoga sessions, and the culinary artistry of our chef. Laughter echoed through the air, mingling with the aromas of tortillas and empanadas we attempted to make, creating memories that would linger.
Kayaking down the river at sunset, navigating mangroves, and stranding our kayaks in shallow waters were all part of the unique experiences we embraced. Singing "Small Town Girl" on the back of a bucky during the ride home from the beach became a cherished memory, accompanied by warm hugs and the heartwarming touch of witnessing baby turtles take their first steps toward the ocean.
Antigua Calling
After bidding a heartfelt farewell to the majority of our retreat family and the enchanting town of El Paredón, a small group of us set our sights on Antigua. The transition to this picturesque town, nestled at the foot of the Acatenango volcano, marked not an end but a seamless continuation of my journey.
Arriving in Antigua, the allure of its cobblestone streets and the imposing silhouette of the volcano beckoned irresistibly. Eager to explore, we meandered through the vibrant streets, immersing ourselves in the lively culture, absorbing the rich tapestry of traditions woven into every corner.
A visit to the local market provided a sensory feast—a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and fragrances capturing Antigua's vibrant identity. As the sun dipped low, we sought vantage points to witness the sunset from above the tiled rooftops.
Antigua, with its charm and character, became a canvas for my stories. Each step through its historic streets added brushstrokes to the evolving narrative of my journey. As night fell, we embraced the unique rhythm of Antigua, a town whispering tales of the past while warmly embracing the present.
As I bid adieu to Guatemala, grateful for the sun-soaked memories made in El Paredón, the vibrant camaraderie, and the charm of Antigua, this marks just the beginning of my adventure. I am grateful for the warm embrace of this coastal haven, the laughter shared, and the lessons learned. With Costa Rica as my next destination, I carry these threads of gratitude forward, weaving them into the tapestry of my journey. Each step leaves an indelible mark, and as the horizon beckons, I anticipate the unwritten tales waiting to unfold.
